Electricity Basics
Amperage
Amperage (amps) is used to measure a specific amount of electricity.
Circuits
Circuits are closed pathways allowing electricity to safely flow from one point to another. It prevents any breaks or gaps in the flow that can cause appliances and equipment to suddenly shut off.
Current
The current is the rate at which charge flows.
Resistance
Resistance covers the tendency of a material to resist the flow of charge current.
Voltage
The force or pressure of the electrical current is referred to as volts (voltage).
Wattage
When you multiply the amps by the volts the resulting measurement is known as wattage (watts).
Restaurant Electrical Codes
Restaurant electrical codes may not seem crucial but there are good reasons why they are in place. While there are several codes issued by the National Electrical Services, we are only going to review a couple of them.
Electrical services codes cover a wide range of appliances and equipment. A few examples are codes for small appliances, dishwasher and range circuits, along with lighting. The distance between circuits is also part of the restaurant’s electrical codes.
The reason for the codes is to help ensure the functionality and safety of restaurant kitchens. Rewiring outlets to deliver the right amount of amperage to an appliance is often expensive. However, following electrical code guidelines can assist you in appliance placement to prevent this costly issue from occurring.
Contacting an electrical solutions provider like Action Services Group, before moving into a new or existing kitchen will help you plan the best location for your equipment. It’s also a good idea to have an electrical services professional asses your kitchen before starting a remodeling project. It will let you know the capabilities of the current electrical system and if any updates are necessary.
